[Doll Lab Ask Me Anything] EP.2: Intimacy, Identity & Technology — Talking Sex Dolls Beyond Stereotypes with Kenneth R. Hanson

In this DAMA session, Doll Lab brought together community members, curious newcomers, and researchers to explore how intimacy, emotional connection, and companionship are evolving in an era of rapidly advancing technology.

Rather than leaning into sensational headlines or surface-level debates, this conversation centers on real human experiences, rigorous research, and respectful, open dialogue.

The discussion offers a thoughtful examination of how people engage with intimacy technologies — including sex dolls and emerging AI companions — and what these relationships reveal about identity, stigma, emotional wellbeing, and modern connection.

Why This Conversation Matters Now

As technology becomes increasingly intertwined with our emotional lives, conversations about intimacy, companionship, and identity are no longer abstract or futuristic — they are happening now.

Sex dolls, intimacy technologies, and AI companions are often discussed through sensational headlines or moral panic. What’s frequently missing are the voices of real users, careful research, and thoughtful dialogue grounded in empathy and understanding.

This live webinar aims to move the conversation beyond stereotypes.

Rather than asking “Is this right or wrong?”, we ask deeper, more human questions:

  • Who are the people engaging with intimacy technologies?
  • What emotional needs are being met?
  • How do identity, stigma, and social narratives shape these experiences?
  • And how should public discourse evolve as technology continues to reshape human connection?

What We’ll Discuss

Topic 1: Real Users, Real Relationships

Who actually uses sex dolls — and why?

Drawing on empirical research and lived experience, this section explores the real motivations behind doll ownership, including emotional companionship, autonomy, safety, and control. We will examine how these realities differ sharply from popular stereotypes, laying a credible foundation for the discussion.

Topic 2: The “Silicone Self” — Identity, Meaning, and Stigma

How do users understand themselves?

We introduce the concept of the “silicone self” — the way users narrate identity, intimacy, and selfhood through their relationships with dolls. This includes how individuals respond to stigma, manage disclosure, and frame their choices as part of a broader sexual selfhood project.

This is the intellectual and theoretical core of the webinar.

Topic 3: Internal Tensions Within the Community

Why this group is not monolithic.

Sex doll communities contain diverse — and sometimes conflicting — perspectives, including pro-sex feminism, critiques of feminism, and strong currents of sexual individualism. We will explore these internal debates honestly, without simplification, highlighting why complexity matters.

Topic 4: From Dolls to AI Companions — Looking Ahead

How intimacy technologies are reshaping human connection.

As dolls become more technologically sophisticated and AI companions emerge, ethical, emotional, and social questions will only intensify. This closing segment looks forward: how should public discussion evolve — thoughtfully, responsibly, and without fear-driven narratives?

Perhaps this suggestion could be raised in the “DAMA Live” session.
I have proposed to several doll manufacturer’s – Why do they not use a ROS doll’s head and put a loudspeaker in the throat connected to a Bluetooth processor and amplifier with a small rechargeable battery. This processor could connect via Bluetooth to either a smart phone or computer running AI software. So the smart phone or computer hears what a human says, then processes this information and send a reply via Bluetooth to the processor in the doll’s head and the doll speaks the replay through the (her) mouth. This would sound most lifelike.

Thank you for sharing this idea — it’s a really thoughtful and interesting suggestion. We appreciate you taking the time to explain it in such detail.

Hello, I’ve emailed both doll manufacturers several times over the months regarding this topic and have not received a reply. Maybe you can help? MMX Doll and FANREAL , are they going to add electric hips and waist, and auto blowjob options to their dolls? They make AMAZING looking Asian dolls, but lack features I believe prospective buyers are looking for. The same would apply to AJL Doll, since MMX Doll makes AJL Doll.

Separate from above. Will MMX Doll and AJL Doll make more height and breast sized Asian dolls that are 5’4″ with a C cup breast? This is a common height and breast size for Asian woman and more realistic than 5’7″ and G size breasts. Thank you!

    1. rosemarydoll sagt:

Thank you for bringing this up. We understand your interest in those features and design options.

We will reach out to both MMX Doll and FANREAL to ask about their future plans regarding features such as electric hips/waist and other automated functions. Once we receive feedback from the manufacturers, we’ll share any updates here.

Thanks again for your suggestion and for supporting these brands.
